17th March Fundraiser

A team of guys going out to help with the work on our Zambia project are holding a fundrasing disco and quiz to help raise money for equipment for an orphanage that they will be involved with during their time there. It would be great if as many of you as possible were able to support them during the evening. Cakes and prizes for raffle welcome. Price per ticket: Adults £3:00, Children Free. Week 4: We took the opportunity to go shopping in the market in Ndola where the girls bought material to use as a chitenge (wrap around skirt) and we marveled at the different amount of fried caterpillars you could buy ( a local delicacy) the smell of fish in a land locked country was also interesting!!! This week has been an amazing week of awesome ministries. Throughout the week we have been back to St Antony’s and are now getting to know the names of the children (the premature baby, Martha, is growing in strength and Stevie has started to walk (despite the fact that at 8 years old his legs are no wider than my big toe). we have seen people delivered from demons in church and whilst on hut-to-hut and one lady gave her life to Christ as well. We have also learnt about the devastating witchcraft related ritual sacrifices at lifeline this week.

Fitness this week has been record breaking!!!! The girls and Pete managed to complete the run route in 21:05 minutes, Ed followed closely behind on a bicycle due to rough knees and Jo’s ankle has almost made a full recovery so she is looking forward to getting back into the fitness routine.

Editors note: it’s a good job we are out doing fitness otherwise we would all be putting on weight thanks to Catharine’s lovely cooking, the African diet being easily characterized as carbohydrates and cabbage!!

We spent some time with the Kaniki Bible University College students as they shared from their weekend ministries. (Which they delivered with great enthusiasm. It has to be said that UK sung worship does not touch African style.)

Our Bemba is coming on and we no longer say:
“Good afternoon, how are you this morning?”
But can now say: “Ni Nebo Ed” Which roughly translated means: “I am Ed!!!!”

So overall we have had a great week and are now looking forward to our first expedition in 2 weeks time as we begin the preparation for it this week.

The team's third week of life on SAQ has almost come to an end. They have thoroughly enjoyed starting their ministries. Two highlights of the week are delivering the toy box to St Anthony's. It was a precious moment to see the kids faces light up with excitement. Secondly Ed and Zoe ventured into the bush with Pastor Albert to do some hut to hut. Dawnting though it was, they enjoyed the challenge. Jo sprained her ankle on Tuesday, which is improving, but please pray for her continued healing. Peter sprayed the building which has led to a welcome increase in dead bugs. AJ enjoyed her morning being used as a climbing frame at the pre-school.....

Week 2!

20.01.12 – This week has been our last week of Orientation which started with a fun day in Kamfinsa. Kamfinsa is a village about 45 minutes cycle away through the forest and crop fields. The day was spent playing games with about 80 local people before doing a drama based on the book of Daniel. It was great to see so many people smiling and having fun together. Quality quote whilst playing musical statues:

Jo asked one of the Zambian ladies (who translates for us): “whose still moving?’
Reply: ‘That one over there with the brown complexion’.
Jo then replied, looking at a sea of kids faces: ‘you better go and get them’.

We have spent a lot of time using ‘see-through’ paint this week – painting the volunteer house at Kaniki with the worst paint possible – definitely a good advertisement for dulux.

We have had some ace worship times both at church and with the bible college students and have also had some quality team times together. One of the students favorite sayings, now being: ‘are you ready big Eddie’.

We have also been up at 5.45am every morning, exercising 3 mornings a week, sit ups and the plank leaving Ed holding his stomach for the next 3 days. Leaving the team with a far greater understanding of the saying ‘laugh ‘til your stomach hurts.’

The local staple food, ‘nshima’ also become apart of our diets this week. It is probably fair to say, that if the aim of eating is to become full – then it definitely ensures that, however, if the aim is to become satisfied, it is some-what lacking.; definitely the African equivalent of marmite.

The final thing to add is that we ran a fellowship evening consisting of fun and games, the same games used for young children in UK. The evening was eventful and we learnt how competitive the Zambian students can be. The highlight of the night was Principle kaluba getting shaving cream all over his face in our final game, the students were roaring with laughter.

Praise points:

- That the Lord has kept us smiling through a week of painting and that we met our target for the end of the week.
- For a VERY successful evening with the students on Friday evening
- We praise God that he has faithfully kept us all in good health this week
- That God is good!

Prayer points:

- Please pray for Nicola (an ex- AQer) who is under going major surgery for face cancer on the 30th January.
- Dina (a guy who works for Kaniki) who has been un well and has been driven down to Lusaka for scans and hopefully treatment.
- For continued good health
